This piece emerged from the depths of my imagination into reality recently. I had a bunch of work to do, but really wanted to play. “I’ll forge one tentacle I said to myself.” Days later, dirty, tired, and immensely happy, this was the result.
It is entirely hand forged from steel. Everything is wonderfully textured. The radiant crown was created using armoring techniques to give it 3D curvature and stiff, inflexible shaping. The gold color is from hot brushing with brass. The texture is a combination of hammer strikes, torch melting, and welding.
It weighs approximately 15 lbs. while you can see through the eyeholes, it is not a functional mask.
I don’t do straight up sculpture very often, and nothing else like this exists. It is truly a one of a kind piece of art.
